David Roy's 'Wood that Works' collection emphasizes his vision of creating [kinetic art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/type-8-daniel-engelberg) that function as machines. These intricate wooden designs are beautiful on their own but paired with the movement created when a hand-cranked gear is turned, Roy's moving sculptures are mesmerizing. The mechanical gear design of each piece is highly interconnected and creates an [optical illusion-like visual experience](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/optical-flow). Each piece has multiple layers that circle around each other to produce various interesting patterns. Transforming the concept of wall art, Roy pushes the boundaries and increases the level of creativity in form that fellow artists can be inspired by. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.7/10 - Popularity: 18% | Activity: 56% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Kinetic Sculptures:** Wooden art pieces that have mechanical functionality for a mesmerizing visual experience. - **Natural-functional Contrast:** Designs that contrast natural materials with complex mechanical functionality. - **Moving Optical Illusions:** Sculptures that produce interesting patterns through interconnected mechanical gear designs. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art and Design:** There is potential to innovate the art industry by creating new forms of mechanical art, using natural materials such as wood. - **Home Decor:** Kinetic sculptures can be integrated into home decor and could become more popular in the future. - **Entertainment:** These sculptures could be used to create engaging and interactive displays at exhibits, events, or even theme parks. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md) - [Geometric Wooden Art Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aleph-geddis.md) - [Dynamic Moving-Illusion Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moving-furniture.md) - [Kinetic Art Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/la-machine.md) - [Sculpted Rhythm Forms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-kinetic-collection.md) - [Geometric Sculpture Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/illusion-box.md) - [Physics-Informed Digital Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/motion-sculpture.md) - [Fluid Function Art Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/optical-flow.md) - [Dynamic Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/art-in-motion-exhibition.md)
