# Movie Critic Film Graphics This Movie Ratings Chart Shows What the Critics and the Public Thought By Angela Rajic | Published 2014-02-25 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/movie-ratings References: [mightymega](http://mightymega.com/2014/02/12/movie-trilogies-meta-scores-compared/) & [visual.ly](http://visual.ly/movies-so-nice-they-made-them-thrice) Artist Teresa Tobat has created an excellent and informative movie ratings chart. The infographic takes film trilogies and compares their meta scores per movie from [IMDB](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-luvit) users and film critics. The result showcases interesting patterns, specifically that both critic and users scores drop with each consecutive installment in the franchise. Examples of this include Rush Hour, Shrek and the Blade trilogy. Another common pattern seen in this movie ratings chart is a good first installment followed by middling second installment before a much more acclaimed third installment, like with The Lord of the Rings and Hannibal. This movie ratings chart is accompanied by charming [eight-bit illustrations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rankreel) of one or two characters from each film trilogy. There are illustrations of Spiderman, Hannibal Lector, Marty McFly and Doc Brown and more. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.4/10 - Popularity: 7% | Activity: 27% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) > [Media](https://www.trendhunter.com/media) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Meta Score Decline:** The movie ratings chart shows a trend of decreasing meta scores for consecutive installments in film trilogies, highlighting the opportunity for disruptive innovation in creating consistent quality throughout a franchise. - **First-middle-third Pattern:** The pattern of a good first installment, middling second installment, and acclaimed third installment observed in the movie ratings chart suggests an opportunity for disruptive innovation in developing sequels that exceed expectations. - **Illustrations as Visual Enhancement:** The use of charming eight-bit illustrations in the movie ratings chart opens up opportunities for disruptive innovation in incorporating visually appealing graphics to enhance data visualization. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Film Production:** The movie ratings chart presents an opportunity for disruptive innovation within the film production industry, encouraging the creation of high-quality sequels and franchises that consistently exceed expectations. - **Data Visualization:** The incorporation of data visualization in the movie ratings chart highlights the potential for disruptive innovation in the field of data visualization, particularly in relation to analyzing and presenting movie ratings. - **Graphic Design:** The use of charming illustrations in the movie ratings chart suggests possibilities for disruptive innovation in the field of graphic design, such as incorporating unique visual elements to enhance infographics and data representation. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Cinematic Exploration Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cinema-roadmap.md) - [Cinematic Discovery Platforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/whats-after-the-movie.md) - [Movie-Themed Art NFTs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cheeky-kyser.md) - [Movie Recommendation Platforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/film-finder.md) - [Independent Recommendation Engines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/criticker.md) - [Social Movie-Ranking Platforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moty.md) - [Social Review App Features](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rotten-tomatoes-and-tiktok.md) - [Personalized Movie Recommendations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/movie-night-curator.md) - [Movie Title Search Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/titlefindr.md)
