# California Eco-Resorts Monterey Bay Shores Will Be World's Greenest Getaway By Marissa Brassfield | Published 2009-02-01 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monterey-bay-shores References: [treehugger](http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/01/greenest-eco-resort-world-plans.php) & [montereybayshores](http://www.montereybayshores.com/index.html) This February, construction for [Monterey Bay Shores](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/green-chef) will begin; the [California eco-resort](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/regent-santa-monica-beach) is set to be the world's greenest. Every inch of its 29 acres has been designed with maximum sustainability and minimal damage to the environment. For starters, Monterey Bay Shores will obtain 30% of its power from solar and wind farms implemented onsite. There will be five acres of living rooftops and abundant landscape to provide habitats for endangered species, according to TreeHugger. All told, the eco-friendly measures undertaken for Monterey Bay Shores give it half the carbon footprint of a traditional structure of its size, and the eco-resort will shoot for LEED platinum certification. An understated but crucial aspect to Monterey Bay Shores' sustainability is its location. Unlike the bevy of [far-flung eco-resorts worldwide](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hotel-shilla), Monterey Bay Shores is within driving distance for millions of tourists. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.0/10 - Popularity: 68% | Activity: 43% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Sustainable Hospitality:** The construction of Monterey Bay Shores, the world's greenest eco-resort, highlights the growing trend of sustainable practices in the hospitality industry. - **Renewable Energy Integration:** Monterey Bay Shores' utilization of solar and wind farms onsite showcases the trend of integrating renewable energy sources into resort infrastructure. - **Proximity-based Eco-tourism:** The location of Monterey Bay Shores, within driving distance for millions of tourists, highlights a trend in the eco-resort industry of focusing on proximity-based tourism to minimize transportation-related carbon emissions. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Hospitality:** The sustainable practices and green initiatives implemented by Monterey Bay Shores exemplify potential disruptive innovation opportunities for the hospitality industry to differentiate and attract environmentally-conscious guests. - **Renewable Energy:** The integration of solar and wind farms by Monterey Bay Shores presents an opportunity for the renewable energy industry to further showcase the viability and benefits of such energy sources in the tourism and hospitality sectors. - **Eco-tourism:** Monterey Bay Shores' focus on proximity-based eco-tourism highlights an industry trend where environmentally-friendly resorts strive to attract guests who seek sustainable vacation experiences closer to their home to reduce their carbon footprint. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Eco-Friendly Rainforest Resorts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mandai-rainforest-resort.md) - [Eco-Friendly Hotel-Home Hybrids](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hotel-homes.md) - [Floating Eco-Tourist Hotels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/turtle-bay.md) - [World-Class Mexican Resorts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kanai-resort.md) - [Eco-Conscious Adult-Only Resorts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/secrets-bahia-mita-surf.md) - [Luxe Tented Biophilic Resorts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/naviva.md) - [Elevated Coastal Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monterey-home.md) - [Luxuriously Modern Beachside Resorts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/regent-santa-monica-beach.md) - [Seaside Resort Spas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/oceanstone-resort.md)
