# Laid-Back Alien Art Monarch by David Herbert Has a Shakespearean Sci-Fi Inspiration By Meghan Young | Published 2011-11-14 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monarch-by-david-herbert References: [mymodernmet](http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/worlds-chillest-alien) & [davidherbert](http://www.davidherbert.com/) The sculpture titled Monarch by David Herbert is sure to look eerily similar to many people. That's because it was inspired by the alien from the 'Alien' film franchise directed by Ridley Scott. Yet instead of being as menacing as that particular alien, or any other art tributes for that matter, this sculpture looks strangely at peace. Reclined on a rocking chair with a butterfly resting on its wrist, the sculpture Monarch by David Herbert has more of a theatrical influence than a horror or science fiction one. As the artist says, "I wanted to make a sort of Shakespearean theme of a fallen autocrat." Its form was also inspired by Swiss artist H. R. Giger's illustrations. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.9/10 - Popularity: 51% | Activity: 28% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Sci-fi Art:** Artists are creating eerie, futuristic sculptures that can capture the attention of science-fiction enthusiasts. - **Theatrical Sculpture:** Sculptors are moving away from traditional forms to create sculptures that tell a story and evoke emotions. - **Intricate Designs:** Artists are incorporating intricate details into their sculptures, breathing life into otherwise inanimate objects. ### Where This Applies - **Art and Sculpture:** Artists and sculptors can capitalize on the growing interest in unconventional art forms, creating sculptures that tell vivid, emotion-infusing stories. - **Film and Entertainment:** Filmmakers and entertainment companies can tap into the growing popularity of sci-fi art and create movie franchises that appeal to a wide audience. - **Fashion and Home Decor:** Fashion and home decor companies can incorporate the intricate designs of sculptures into their products, adding a touch of elegance to everyday objects. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Otherworldly Themed Rocking Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ufo-rocking.md) - [Exquisite AI-Designed Thrones](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/throne-design.md) - [Insect-Inspired Bronze Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/insect-bronze-sculptures.md) - [Anthropomorphic Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/star-lounger.md) - [Alien-Inspired Metal Stool Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/metal-stool-1.md) - [Sci-Fi Show Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yusuke-hanai-1.md) - [Sci-Fi Nostalgic Dragon Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ground-dragon.md) - [Space Travel-Inspired Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aerospace-seat-spn01.md) - [Suspenseful Statement Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/edgeofyr.md)
