Working off of the framework for the [REK Bookcase](http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/expansion-bookshelf-rek-design-grows-with-your-need), it addresses the problem that it required a lot of space to install it. Although this storage unit can also take up a lot of room, it is meant to be built over time so that people create a custom design that fits their space and lifestyle best. Made up of simple, [singular rectangle units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ratio-series), the Modular Shelves by Reinier de Jong are fitted together via dowels. The overall design was inspired by the gestalt principles. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.7/10 - Popularity: 97% | Activity: 65% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Modular Storage Solutions:** The trend of modular storage solutions allows for customizable designs that can be built over time to fit individual spaces and lifestyles. - **Space-optimization Furniture:** The trend of space-optimization furniture addresses the problem of limited space by offering innovative storage solutions that can be tailored to fit different needs. - **Gestalt-inspired Furniture:** The trend of gestalt-inspired furniture takes inspiration from gestalt principles to create unique and visually appealing designs. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** The furniture design industry can capitalize on the trend by creating modular storage solutions that offer customizable designs and efficient space utilization. - **Interior Design:** The interior design industry can benefit from the trend by incorporating space-optimization furniture into small or compact spaces, maximizing functionality and aesthetics. - **Home Improvement:** The home improvement industry can tap into the trend by offering gestalt-inspired furniture that adds a touch of uniqueness and style to any living space. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Flexible Storage Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brickbox-modular-shelving.md) - [Adaptable Flat-Pack Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-pack-shelving.md) - [Customizable Style-Conscious Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ledoux-modular-shelf-system.md) - [Modular Decor Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/halblang-blendend.md) - [Jigsaw Puzzle-Inspired Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/puzzle-shelf.md) - [Customizable Storage Furniture Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelved-modular-furniture.md) - [Modular Storage Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/original-modern-shelving.md) - [Dynamic Storage-Display Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelf-life.md) - [Modern Modular Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelving-unit-01.md)
