The architects wished to enhance the existing craftsmanship of the home, as well as create more space within a relatively small site. This meant creating an [extension on the ground floor](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/palm-house) that contains the courtyard, essentially blurring the distinction between indoors and out. Upstairs, an addition was added by placing a 'box' on top of the lower level. A [perforated screen featuring a floral motif](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hoj-house) covers it for sun protection. The architects explain, "Internally, the box is its own zone; bedrooms, bathroom and play room for the children. Externally[,] the box defines the character of the extension, highlighting the change from existing house to contemporary home in a sympathetic but contrasting manner." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.9/10 - Popularity: 60% | Activity: 49% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Indoor-outdoor Blurring:** Opportunity for innovative design that merges indoor and outdoor spaces in residential and commercial architecture. - **Perforated Screens:** Potential for the use of decorative and functional perforated screens as a design element in building facades and interiors. - **Box Extensions:** Emerging trend of adding box-like extensions to existing structures to create additional living or work space. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** Opportunity for architects to create innovative designs that incorporate trends such as the blurring of indoor and outdoor spaces and box extensions. - **Construction:** Opportunity for construction companies to embrace the use of innovative building materials and techniques, such as perforated screens, in the development of modern structures. - **Interior Design:** Potential for interior designers to incorporate perforated screens as a decorative or functional element in home and commercial spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Adaptive Family Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carlton-cottage-extension.md) - [Hidden Urban Oasis Cottages](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/quarry-house.md) - [Timber-Clad Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/thornbury-house.md) - [Illuminated Curved Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cereus-house.md) - [Sleek Garden-Edge Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/waverley-house.md) - [Textural Tranquil Cottage Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/harriets-house.md) - [Gabled Annexe Vintage Cottages](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/solitgarreau-residence.md) - [Living Landscape Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hedge-and-arbour-house.md) - [Flexible Family Spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-simple-addition.md)
