# Modern Eggchitecture Berlin's Free University is a Work and Study Mecca By Shelby Lee Walsh | Published 2009-05-26 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modern-architecture-berlins-free-university References: [wejetset](http://www.wejetset.com/magazine/2009/5/25/670/places_to_see:_design) This inspirational work of architecture is for The Free University of Berlin and was eight years in the making. It is built to serve as a work and study mecca that is environmentally stimulating. The neat lighting and the artistic and modern egg-like design is setting the bar for architects everywhere. **Implications** - The architectural wonder is made even more extravagant due to the fact that it contrasts so well with its angular and straight-edged surroundings. I can only hope architects everywhere are inspired and begin emulating these sorts of designs in areas closer to me. The Free University may have took eight years to build, but judging by the above gallery, it was worth the wait. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.4/10 - Popularity: 59% | Activity: 36% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Innovative Campus Architecture:** Free University of Berlin's egg-like modern design is innovating campus architecture. - **Sustainable Study Spaces:** The environmentally stimulating design of Free University's campus inspires sustainable study spaces. - **Artistic Lighting Solutions:** Free University's neat lighting solutions inspire artistic ways to illuminate structures. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture and Construction:** The architectural design industry can embrace the egg-like design to innovate modern structures. - **Education:** The education industry can consider environmentally stimulating and sustainable study spaces that promote productivity. - **Lighting Design:** The lighting design industry can consider artistic lighting solutions for structures that merge aesthetic and function. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Traditional Sustainable School Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/universidad-ean-1.md) - [Fried Egg-Inspired Canopy Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sunny-side-up-extension.md) - [Brutalist Converted Learning Centers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/archipelago.md) - [Curved Green Roof-Topped Museums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sunner-museum.md) - [Barn-Style Teaching Buildings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/learning-house.md) - [Modern Blue-Accented Academic Buildings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/marie-esther-pavilion.md) - [Welcoming Prefabricated Student Housing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ignacio-prego-architectures.md) - [Ancient Construction Campus Buildings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/faroe-islands.md) - [Floating-Style Classroom Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bloomberg-center.md)
