What makes this comfy abode unique is the fact that it is designed using alternating cubes of [timber and glass](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/thornbury-house) to create a harmonious balance between natural sunlight streaming through and a cooling shade -- and unobstructed views of the backyard and privacy at the same time. Designed by Australia-based office Panovscott, the mixed material house is home to a family that needed to give their [gloomy Victorian house a modern upgrade](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mygunyah-by-the-circus) and create space and privacy for their children. "Their second child was due shortly when they approached us, so they wanted light, air, a place for the family to commune, and they wanted a great building," says architect Andrew Scott from Panovscott. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.0/10 - Popularity: 52% | Activity: 31% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Mixed Material Architecture:** Using alternating cubes of timber and glass in architecture to achieve natural sunlight streaming through, privacy and unobstructed views. - **Cozy Family Homes:** Designing comfortable and modern homes for growing families. - **Sustainable Housing:** Incorporating smart design to create environmentally-conscious and sustainable homes. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** Opportunities for architects and builders to incorporate mixed materials in their designs. - **Real Estate:** Opportunities in the real estate market for cozy family homes. - **Smart Home Technology:** Designing smart homes with sustainable materials to create energy-efficient homes. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Simple Material Family Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/openfield-house.md) - [Family Life-Focused Modern Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pacific-house.md) - [Urban Layered Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/salmon-house.md) - [Sustainable Cubic Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/appels-architekten.md) - [Garden-Connected Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-waverley-house.md) - [Adaptive Family Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carlton-cottage-extension.md) - [Compact Corner Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modus-architect.md) - [Cutout Roof Cement-Clad Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/edition-office.md) - [Anticipatory Architectural Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vulcan-house.md)
