# Gritty Graffiti-Grafted Portraits These Mitar Simikic Photographs are Deliberately Vandalized By Josh Triantafilou | Published 2012-05-04 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mitar-simikic References: [photographyserved](http://www.photographyserved.com/gallery/Formation-face/3374677) & [behance.net](http://www.behance.net/mitarsimikic) Most [portrait photography](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/persona-ai) seeks to focus on subjects as clearly as possible; however, the 'Formation Face' series by Mitar Simikic aims to do the opposite. Each photograph captures a shot of a person's face obscured by graffiti. Some of the markings are reminiscent of something one would find on a [seedy bathroom wall](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dirty-looks). In fact, it's as though Simikic took such a wall, made it transparent somehow, then instructed his models to stand behind the wall and began shooting. In other photographs, the graffiti is less gritty. Almost everyone has doodled on a newspaper, adorning some politician or public figure with a mustache and glasses. In a similar vein, many of Simikic's photographs do the same. This adds a welcome hint of levity to an otherwise serious series. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.3/10 - Popularity: 53% | Activity: 37% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Obscured Portraits:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Creating a new style of portrait photography that intentionally obscures the subject's face with graffiti, adding a unique and edgy aesthetic. - **Graffiti Art Integration:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Exploring the integration of graffiti art with traditional photography to create visually striking and expressive compositions. - **Playful Doodled Portraits:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporating playful doodles and customization into portrait photography to add a sense of whimsy and personalization. ### Where This Applies - **Photography:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Using innovative techniques and aesthetics to redefine traditional portrait photography and appeal to a broader audience. - **Street Art:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Collaborating with photographers to create graffiti-inspired artworks that blur the boundaries between street art and fine art. - **Print Media:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporating doodles and unconventional designs into print media advertising campaigns to capture attention and engage viewers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Artful Custom Mirror Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portraits-collection.md) - [Digital Graffiti NFTs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/graffiti-wall-collection.md) - [Striking Glass Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glass-portraits.md) - [Collaborative Monochromatic Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/collaborative-monochromatic-art-exhibition.md) - [AI-Generated Poetic Photo Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emilio-alarcn.md) - [Enigmatic Graffiti Incidents](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/enigmatic-graffiti.md) - [Imperfect Photography Celebrations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nonnas-cam.md) - [Evolved Vibrant Graffiti Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jan-kalb.md) - [Glamorous Artful Bronze Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sweet-jane.md)
