When it comes it family homes, it can be difficult to balance the needs of the parents and the children. This home manages to strike the perfect balance between comfort and entertainment. The [contemporary rural retreat](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/haus-am-lagnesberg) is located on the edge of a lake in Excelsior, Minnesota. Unlike the surrounding cottages, the contemporary Minnesota lake house has playful features such as a moat around the front and confetti windows in the loft. The unusual features are complemented by colorful furniture and quirky fixtures that allude to the dynamic personalities of each family member. As the architects explain, "The home is a combination of practical materials such as exposed concrete and steel, but with a playful expression focused on family lake living." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.9/10 - Popularity: 88% | Activity: 81% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Playful Architecture:** Exploring unique and unconventional architectural designs that incorporate playful elements can create homes that cater to both the functional and entertainment needs of families. - **Dynamic Interior Design:** Infusing colorful furniture and fixtures into family homes can enhance the individuality of each family member and create a visually stimulating environment. - **Rural Retreats:** Creating contemporary homes in rural settings can provide families with a serene and picturesque environment that promotes relaxed, outdoor living. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture & Design:** Architects and designers can explore the incorporation of playful elements into residential designs, creating unique and engaging living spaces for families. - **Furniture & Decor:** Furniture and decor companies can develop colorful and innovative products that cater to the individual tastes and personalities of family members, adding vibrancy to family homes. - **Real Estate & Property Development:** Developers can focus on creating contemporary and aesthetically pleasing homes in rural areas, providing families with peaceful retreats away from urban environments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Lakeside Family Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/muskoka-lakeside-cottage.md) - [Thoughtful Lakeside Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lakeside-living.md) - [Pavilion-Style Lakeside Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clearwater-lake-retreat.md) - [Organic Lake Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/usonianinspired-lake-house.md) - [Nature-Connecting Vacation Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-by-the-lake.md) - [Mid-Century-Themed Vacation Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bohlin-cywinski-jackson.md) - [Moody Industrial Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pattern-house.md) - [Tranquil Nature-Centric Cabin Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nortehaus.md) - [Repurposed Wooden Shoreside Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tree-house-by-the-lake.md)
