# Transplanted Cranium Doodles Mikkel Sommer Illustrates Gruesome Scenes with Cartoon Heads By Jason Soy | Published 2011-12-18 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mikkel-sommer References: [fuckyeahillustrativeart.tumblr](http://fuckyeahillustrativeart.tumblr.com/post/14325479558/mikkel-sommer) & [mikkelsommer.deviantart](http://mikkelsommer.deviantart.com/) My initial impressions of these Mikkel Sommer illustrations were that they were [fun gesture doodles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/doodle2life) featuring the heads of [Japanese cartoon characters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bedhedz) and edible food mascots. Then I turned my head sideways to view the images horizontally and, to my surprise, these drawings took on a dark and disturbing twist. If you were to heed my suggestion and rotate these Mikkel Sommer sketches clockwise and counterclockwise accordingly, you'll find that they depict badly injured and worn down bodies of male and female individuals. Viewers soon realize that the transplanted heads are actually there to conceal the identity of these people as opposed to being whimsical elements in grotesque renderings. The concept of an [ice cream cone](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-alchemist-by-jdo) for a head has now become deeply disheartening. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.1/10 - Popularity: 21% | Activity: 4% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Transplanted Head Art:** Using transplanted heads as a medium in art for a possibly disturbing twist. - **Concealed Identity Art:** Using concealment in artistic renderings to challenge viewer perception and emotion. - **Dark Twist Illustrations:** Illustrations with a dark twist that subvert viewers' initial impressions. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art and Design:** Artists and designers can use this concept of transplanted head art to create pieces that challenge viewer perceptions. - **Advertising and Marketing:** Advertising or marketing brands can use this concept of concealed identity art to create impactful campaigns. - **Publishing:** Publishers can use this style of dark twist illustrations to create compelling book covers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Hyper-Realistic Flesh Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/junji-ito.md) - [Anime Horror-Style Reimaginations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/junji-ito-artwork.md) - [Distorted Burger Campaigns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ailloween.md) - [Raunchy Anime-Inspired Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manuela-soto-sosa.md) - [Sweet Viral Doughnuts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brainrot-doughnuts.md) - [Human Embraced-Inspired Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wallmounted-sculpture.md) - [Character Crossover Figures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/skullpanda-x-sanrio.md) - [Surreal Love-Themed Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/joakim-ojanen.md) - [Human Torso-Inspired Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lene-bdker.md)
