# Congestion Creativity Bloomberg's New 'Midtown in Motion' Initiative Transforms New York City By Omar Yusuf | Published 2011-07-21 | Social Good Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/midtown-in-motion References: [gizmodo](http://gizmodo.com/5822814/nyc-commuters-will-soon-be-getting-microwaved) & [newyork.cbslocal](http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/07/18/city-testing-new-technology-aimed-at-reducing-traffic-congestion/) Bringing the full technological capacities of the NYC to light, Mayor Michael [Bloomberg](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bloomberg-government) is launching a new, city-wide operation called 'Midtown in Motion,' which hopes to monitor traffic, reduce congestion and improve efficiency in the growing metropolis. As so-called 'Alpha Cities' continue to expand and consume smaller, neighboring towns, it's incredibly important to regularly re-evaluate the blueprints of the city, so as to ensure all the gears are running smoothly. By deploying a huge [network of cameras, microwave sensors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/urban-data) and E-ZPass readers, Mayor Bloomberg hopes to collect information on the city's driving habits and accordingly play around with [traffic lights and turn signals](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/traffic-management-system). This is a seemingly mundane detail of city-preserving, but it's incalculably important. Metropolitan centers like London and Paris develop at a slower pace because of their rarely revised, often-confusing city plans. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.9/10 - Popularity: 2% | Activity: 18% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Social Good](https://www.trendhunter.com/socialgood) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Smart City Infrastructure:** The Midtown in Motion initiative provides an opportunity for businesses to invest in technologies that support smart city infrastructure like IoT sensors, data processing, and predictive analytics to improve urban planning and development. - **Traffic Management Solutions:** As cities continue to expand, businesses can create cost-effective traffic management solutions using the Midtown in Motion project as an example to reduce congestion, improve mobility, and enhance citizen safety. - **Microwave Sensing Technology:** The Midtown in Motion initiative illustrates an opportunity for businesses to explore the potential of microwave sensing technology for tracking traffic data and shaping urban mobility strategies. ### Where This Applies - **Infrastructure:** The Midtown in Motion initiative underscores the need for investment in infrastructure to support the development of smart cities and improved urban planning. - **Transportation:** The Midtown in Motion project provides an opportunity for transportation businesses to collaborate with cities, leveraging technology for efficient and sustainable transportation systems. - **Information Technology (IT):** As cities like New York become smarter, IT companies can invest in machine learning, IoT, and big data analytics to create efficient solutions that promote urban development and enhance quality of life for urban residents. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [IoT-Connected Traffic Beacons](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/traffic-beacon-concept.md) - [Digital City-Inspired Art Works](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grand-central-station.md) - [Multifunctional City Lighting Infrastructure](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/urban-lighting-innovations.md) - [AI-Assisted Urban Traffic Management](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/urban-traffic-management.md) - [AI-Powered Mobility Platforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aipowered-mobility-platform.md) - [Hyper-Fast Charging Stations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/charging-station-1.md) - [Smart City Infrastructure Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/siliconphotonics.md) - [Redesigned Unifying Transit Terminals](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/midtown-bus-terminal.md) - [Kid-Envisioned Urban Environments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-little-big-playmat.md)
