A group of researchers, scientists and engineers working out of the University of Bath and collaborating with colleagues from the Bristol Bioenergy Centre and Queen Mary University have developed a high-tech microbial fuel cell that is effectively a battery that is powered by human urine.

This microbial fuel cell essentially uses bacteria in the urine to provoke chemical reactions that result in the production of electricity, which can then be harnessed and used.

Ultimately, this pee-powered battery would have huge ramifications going forward as it makes use of a free, organic and readily available substance that doesn't require heavy processing or costs to work with, ultimately making it an efficient and eco-friendly way to tackle growing energy needs around the globe.
