Artist Jen Lewis finds beauty in blood, a fact that's made very clear by her latest project, an interesting venture that involves photographing her own menstrual blood.

Lewis became interested in bioartography -- photographs taken during the scientific process -- during her time at the [University of Michigan's](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/on-lightspray-cloudboom-strike-2) Division of Infectious Diseases. She applied the same scientific approach to this project, pouring the blood from her [menstrual cup](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bfree-cup) into the toilet, while her husband captured it all with a DLSR camera and macro lens.

As Lewis' continued [photographing her menstrual blood](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/out-of-orifice), she began varying her process (for instance, switching from the toilet to a tank filled half with fresh water) to get the beautiful variety seen in the photos. Lewis' project effectively takes something viewed as taboo and shameful, transforming it into something beautiful.
