# Bulbous Disaster Lighting The Meltdown Lamp by Johan Lindsten Pays Tribute to Fukushima By Meghan Young | Published 2013-04-11 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/meltdown-lamp References: [trendsnow.net](http://www.trendsnow.net/2013/04/the-meltdown-lamps.html) & [lindstenform](http://www.lindstenform.com/) The nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, turned many people's lives upside down; the Meltdown Lamp not only pays tribute to this tragic event, it also interprets it in the form of home decor. The [bulbous glass lampshade](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/big-glow-light) represents a last defence before a full-blown blight while the lightbulb that appears to be melting through the Meltdown Lamp symbolizes the danger itself. Designed by Johan Lindstén for Cappellini, an Italian company, the Meltdown Lamp essentially attempts to make something beautiful out of a scary situation. Available in a myriad of colorways, the [glass and cord](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bamboo-forest-glss) complement each other beautifully. Nevertheless, the star of the show has to be the bulb itself, which inspires a range of emotions from fear and dismay to uncertainty and hope. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.6/10 - Popularity: 68% | Activity: 61% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Disaster Decor:** Designing home decor that pays tribute to tragic events for artistic expression. - **Emotive Lighting:** Creating lighting fixtures that evoke a range of emotions from fear to hope. - **Tribute Products:** Designing products as an homage to significant events or moments in history. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Home Decor:** The home decor industry can capitalize on creating designs that evoke emotions related to significant events and moments in history. - **Lighting:** The lighting industry can create new designs to evoke specific emotions and moods in people for home and commercial spaces. - **Art and Design:** The art and design industry can focus on creating pieces that commemorate significant events or moments, allowing for unique artistic expression. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Archetypal Conical Light Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fragile-lamp.md) - [Tornado-Inspired Illuminator Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/storm-lamp.md) - [Japanese Lantern-Inspired Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/madco.md) - [Bulbous Whimsical Lighting Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/neotenic.md) - [Molten Glass Lighting Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/foscarini-1.md) - [Luxe Candle-Melting Lamp](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/infra-luna-20.md) - [Fruit-Inspired Lighting Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/banana-lamp.md) - [Brutalist Bedside Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vestige-lamp.md) - [Pasta-Inspired Curvaceous Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/neotenic-lamp.md)
