# Defeated Heroine Photography Melanie Jane's 'Beyond Wonderland' Shows Another Side of Alice By Michael Hines | Published 2010-07-05 | Fashion Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/melanie-jane References: [behance.net](http://www.behance.net/gallery/Beyond-Wonderland/554726) & [behance.net](http://www.behance.net/sugarcreative) Melanie Jane's 'Beyond Wonderland' is all about capturing what happens after the "happily ever after" in children's stories. Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Alice all get a harsh reality check. [Alice looks terrible here](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/michaels-alices-adventures-collection). Maybe this is what happens after you come out of the rabbit hole. Snow White seems to have overdosed on apples and Little Red Riding Hood looks less like grandma's little girl and more like a woman of the night. Melanie Jane does a great job of putting a [unique spin](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jeffrey-deitch-art-gallery) on these [timeless characters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sleepless-beauty). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.0/10 - Popularity: 85% | Activity: 88% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 10% men, 90% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Fashion](https://www.trendhunter.com/fashion) > [Photography](https://www.trendhunter.com/stylephotography) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Dark Fairy Tales:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Create a new genre of storytelling that explores the dark and realistic side of traditional children's stories. - **Character Reimagining:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop a market for reimagining popular characters in ways that challenge traditional narratives and expectations. - **Post-happily Ever After:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore the untold stories and consequences of what happens to our favorite fairy tale characters after their happily ever after moments. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Photography:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Introduce a new style of photography that captures alternative narratives and perspectives in familiar subjects. - **Entertainment:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Create new forms of entertainment content that subvert and reimagine beloved characters and stories. - **Cosplay:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Offer alternative cosplay options and experiences that allow people to embody darker and more realistic interpretations of popular fictional characters. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Whimsical Harlequin-Patterned Décor Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alices-adventures-collection.md) - [Storybook-Inspired Fragrances](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mischief-academy.md) - [Glamorous Artful Bronze Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sweet-jane.md) - [Equitable Fairy Tale Books](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fair-tales-by-odeabank.md) - [Whimsical Childlike Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-eternal-child.md) - [Dairytale Bridal Tributes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/disney-wedding-dresses-1.md) - [Whimsically Designed Hotel Interiors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cowley-manor-experimental.md) - [Apocalypse Post Pandemic Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contemporary-urban-art.md) - [Unique Artistic Books](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amusebouche.md)
