The piece shows Mary Ann Shadd surrounded by bundles of newspapers, highlighting her role as the [first Black female newspaper editor](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/saint-heron-1) and publisher in North America. In addition to this title, she is also the second Black woman to receive a law degree in the United States, and is well-known as being a pioneer in the fight for women's suffrage and abolition.

In an interview, Theodore spoke to the significance of the piece, stating "I hope people will look at this illustration of a remarkable Black woman from the 1800s and feel inspired by what she was able to accomplish against all odds as an editor, educator, and activist."
