# Minimalist Desktop Music-Makers Martin Wecke's '108' Lets Aspiring DJs Create Techno Beats By Joey Haar | Published 2016-07-13 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/martin-wecke References: [producthunt](https://www.producthunt.com/tech/108) & [martinwecke.de](http://martinwecke.de/108/) Throughout history, creating music has become progressively more accessible: where once artists needed a full orchestra to create symphonies, today, [browser apps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/slice-of-music) like Martin Wecke's '108' let anyone with Internet access create compelling techno beats. 108, so named because of its built-in tempo of 108 beats per minute (BPM), is a game-cum-[music production software](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/discover-music) app that helps users create minimalist -- yet surprisingly listenable -- loops. In both utility and layout, Martin Wecke's browser app is as elegantly nuanced as the music it creates. 108 functions through the use of just five sounds, each controlled by a letter on the keyboard. When users press a sound, an icon (which represents that particular sound) appears on the circle (which represents the beat's loop.) A small dot revolves around the circle at 108 BPM, activating the sounds as it hits their icons. 108 is a creative visualization of looped beats -- and it's one that even amateur beatsmiths can get addicted to. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.4/10 - Popularity: 21% | Activity: 13% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Multimedia](https://www.trendhunter.com/multimedia) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Browser Music-makers:** The rise of browser-based music-makers has made creating techno beats accessible to anyone with Internet access. - **Minimalist Music Production:** Creating minimalist yet surprisingly listenable loops is a growing trend in music production. - **Elegant Nuances in Music Production:** The use of elegantly nuanced interfaces can create an enjoyable music production experience for both professionals and amateurs. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Music Software Development:** Companies specializing in creating browser-based music production software can disrupt the traditional digital audio workspace industry. - **Music Education:** The rise of minimalist music-making tools can create opportunities for music educators to offer beginner courses in electronic music production. - **Gaming:** Developers can create more game-cum-music production software apps to cater to the growing demand for browser-based music-making tools. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Gamified Music-Making Machines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beat-machine.md) - [Online Music Mixers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sprunki-game.md) - [Modular Music Makers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sound-blocks.md) - [Affordable Music-Making Devices](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/easyplay-1s.md) - [Music Creation Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/copyrightfree-music.md) - [Browser Audio Toolkits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ritmo.md) - [AI Music Production Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aimusicone.md) - [Musical Productivity Apps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/focusbeats.md) - [Pocket-Sized Beat Makers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stylophone-beat.md)
