After two years of research, plants grown in Martian soil have been deemed edible and safe to eat. Radishes, peas, rye, and tomatoes and other plants and vegetables were all grown in the simulation of Martian soil in the experiment conducted by a research team from the [Wageningen University & Research Center](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ancient-enzymes-for-medical-cannabinoids) in the Netherlands. The experiment included rye, tomato, pea, radish, spinach, leek, cress, garden rocket, chives, and quinoa.

The radish was the first vegetable to be tested for safeness of consumption. The other vegetables, such as potatoes, green beans and carrots, are still being tested for heavy metals. However, it is very promising that the radish, pea, rye, and [tomato plants](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/windset-farms-1) all tested within normal levels of heavy metals. This is a huge step in the research for creating a human colony on Mars, which [NASA](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/astrolab-flex-rover) hopes to do by the 2030s.
