The legacy of [gay liberation activist](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/2slgbtqi-community) Marsha P. Johnson is being permanently recognized after New York's governor Andrew Cuomo tweeted to announce that Brooklyn's East River Park will be renamed the Marsha P Johnson State Park.

As an outspoken transgender and gay rights activist, the self-identified drag queen Marsha P. Johnson is largely credited with leading the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which catalyzed the gay right's movement in America. The renaming of the popular park is a small token in the continued acknowledgement of the work and legacy of Johnson and her fellow activists.
