# Parasitic Cabin Installations The Manifest Destiny! Project Encourages Unorthodox Dwellings By Meghan Young | Published 2012-02-20 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manifest-destiny References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2012/02/16/manifest-destiny-by-mark-reigelman/) & [markreigelman](http://www.markreigelman.com/) The Manifest Destiny! [art installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/faraday-cage) is based around a cabin that has leeched onto a larger building just like a parasite. It explores the idea of setting down roots in unorthodox places. Located in San Francisco, Manifest Destiny! addresses the idea that as cities become more crowded, people will need [alternatives to traditional homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-cabana). The designer writes, "Manifest Destiny! is our God-given imperative as modern explorers, to seek out parcels of unclaimed territory and boldly establish a new home front in the remaining urban voids of San Francisco." Created by Brooklyn-based artist Mark Reigelman in collaboration with architect Jenny Chapman and engineer Paul Endres, Manifest Destiny! even has a lit window, which cleverly suggests that someone is residing inside at that very moment. The light is powered by a [solar panel mounted onto the roof](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/e55000). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.0/10 - Popularity: 93% | Activity: 78% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Alternative Dwelling Solutions:** The trend of finding unorthodox places to set down roots is providing opportunities for innovative housing solutions. - **Parasitic Architecture:** The concept of buildings leeching onto larger structures is disrupting traditional architectural practices and opening up new possibilities for urban development. - **Sustainable Living:** The use of solar panels and other green technologies in unconventional dwellings is driving the trend towards more sustainable living options. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** Architects can explore the potential of parasitic architecture to create unique and efficient structures that adapt to crowded urban environments. - **Real Estate:** Real estate professionals can find opportunities in marketing and selling alternative dwelling solutions to people looking for unconventional housing options. - **Renewable Energy:** The renewable energy industry can leverage the trend of sustainable living by developing innovative solar panels and other eco-friendly technologies for use in unconventional dwellings. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Moon-Bound Architectural Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moonhouse-project.md) - [Inversion Living Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tiny-getaway.md) - [Sustainable Off-Grid Minimal Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fremont-house.md) - [Origami-Inspired Sleek Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/infinity-mobile-architecture-system.md) - [Futuristic Modular Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pebl-grand-cabin.md) - [Elevated Treetop Modern Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/buitenverblijf-nest.md) - [Shape‑shifting Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-offgrid-house.md) - [Compact Modular Forest Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/digital-house.md) - [Abstract Fantasy Home Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/abstract-fantasy-home.md)
