# Modular Maki-Inspired Seating The 'Maki' Chair Can be Used on its Own or in Multiples By Michael Hemsworth | Published 2020-02-20 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/maki-chair References: [yankodesign](https://www.yankodesign.com/2020/02/19/this-maki-roll-inspired-chair-is-as-fancy-as-the-sushi-you-crave/) & [jinkuramoto](http://www.jinkuramoto.com/project/) The 'Maki' chair has been designed by Jin Kuramoto for OFFECCT as a [sushi-inspired seating solution](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bun-bun-chair) that can be used on its own or in multiples to create an array of different setups. The chair is characterized by its sculpted backrest section that curves onto itself and creates a comfortable place to relax, read a book or simply unwind. The curved design also accommodates the chair being positioned [side-by-side](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/same-same) with as many additional seats as desired to create a [sculpted seating section](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sundae-modular-lounge) or a squiggly line of individual places to sit. The 'Maki' chair is focused on allowing the owner to switch up the functionality and have it work for them instead of having to deal with static alternatives that don't match their needs. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.4/10 - Popularity: 95% | Activity: 88% | Freshness: 9% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Modular Seating:** The 'Maki' chair demonstrates the trend of modular seating, allowing for customizable setups and configurations. - **Sculpted Backrest:** The sculpted backrest of the 'Maki' chair highlights the trend of ergonomic design, providing increased comfort and relaxation. - **Versatile Furniture:** The 'Maki' chair embodies the trend of versatile furniture, enabling users to use it on its own or in multiples for various purposes. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture Design:** The 'Maki' chair presents disruptive innovation opportunities in the furniture design industry, encouraging the development of more modular and versatile seating solutions. - **Interior Design:** The 'Maki' chair offers opportunities for disruptive innovation in the interior design industry, promoting the creation of unique seating arrangements that can be easily rearranged and customized. - **Hospitality:** The 'Maki' chair provides disruptive innovation opportunities for the hospitality industry, allowing for versatile seating configurations in hotels, restaurants, and lounges. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Mochi-Inspired Seating Lines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mochiinspired-seating.md) - [Elegant Wooden Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/miko-armchair.md) - [Minimalist Privacy Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/furniture-seat-design.md) - [Modular Seating Design Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pla-modular-chair.md) - [Modular Knit Seating Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knit-one.md) - [Table-Equipped Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/migo-chair.md) - [Modular Chromatic Child Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kidzilla-chair.md) - [Curved Comfort Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mysa.md) - [Puzzle-Like Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twinsmdf.md)
