# Ice Crystal Cabins Mainehouse by FreelandBuck Establishes a Unique Site Interaction By Amelia Roblin | Published 2011-07-05 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mainehouse-by-freelandbuck References: [suckerpunchdaily](http://www.suckerpunchdaily.com/2011/06/29/maine-house/#more-15069) & [freelandbuck](http://www.freelandbuck.com/Projects/Mainehouse) The [lush forested shoreline](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/openspace-architecture) of Portland Maine demanded an environmentally sensitive structure, though the Mainehouse by [FreelandBuck](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tunnel-vision-installation) may be the last sort of dwelling one might have expected to see on this site. Making its presence very clear with its monumental geometric masses set against the delicate organic forms of tree branches and the stony waterfront, the idiosyncratic dwelling may not impose upon its surroundings in the way it may initially seem to. The designers of this abstract abode opted for a style of architecture that would embody the interplay of solid and void, which enables the Mainehouse by FreelandBuck to sit relatively lightly on the [rocky beach](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/campos-studio), supported by upturned pyramidal shapes that open into vast interior spaces. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.3/10 - Popularity: 95% | Activity: 87% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Environmentally Sensitive Architecture:** Opportunity for innovative designs that harmonize with and minimize impact on natural surroundings. - **Abstract Abodes:** Potential to create unique and visually striking residential structures that challenge traditional architectural norms. - **Interplay of Solid and Void:** Possibility to explore spatial dynamics and create visually captivating interiors with strategic use of geometric shapes. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture and Design:** Opportunities for architects to push boundaries and create eco-friendly structures that blend seamlessly with nature. - **Real Estate Development:** Potential to cater to the demand for avant-garde, environmentally conscious residences in picturesque locations. - **Construction Materials:** Demand for innovative materials that allow for dramatic architectural designs while maintaining structural integrity. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dark-Green Minimal Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/scalar-architecture.md) - [Forest-Treetop Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/more-cabin.md) - [Shore-Perched Modern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tongass-ledge.md) - [Hilltop Modern Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-cloud-house.md) - [Faceted Cedar Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-house-on-a-hill.md) - [Coastal Island Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pasparakisfriel.md) - [Thoughtful Lakeside Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lakeside-living.md) - [Contemporary Nature-Inspired Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nebo-house.md) - [Scattered Boulder-Inspired Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rockbound.md)
