# Navigation-Aiding Architecture Canada's Magdalen Islands Home to Yves Beriault and Diane Deco By Jessica Marcel | Published 2010-01-31 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/magdalen-islands References: [dwell](http://www.dwell.com/articles/blue-in-the-facade.html) & [magdalenislands.blogspot](http://magdalenislands.blogspot.com/) Yves Bériault and Diane Decoste followed a tradition in the Magdalen Islands in painting their home a bright(though not ridiculous) color. The home is contemporary but classic and it fits in perfectly in the [seaside community](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/casa-de-praia). The interior is beautifully highlighted with rich woods and arched ceilings. An unusual wood hallway connects the front and back of the home, giving this Magdalen Islands home a [nautical feel](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/three-mile-harbor). **Implications** - The old tradition of painting your house a [bright color](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gdr-bungalow) was "born of maritime necessity." The fishermen used to paint their boats the same color as their homes and use their homes as "reference points when sailing." Yves Bériault and Diane Decoste's bright-blue house actually looks quite nice! ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.5/10 - Popularity: 10% | Activity: 26% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Bright-colored Houses:** The trend of brightly colored houses is disrupting the traditional approach to architecture by providing unique navigation landmarks. - **Nautical-feel Interiors:** The trend of nautical-feel interiors is disrupting interior design by offering a unique theme that highlights wooden surfaces and arched ceilings. - **Navigation-inspired Architecture:** The trend of navigation-inspired architecture is disrupting the architecture industry by offering designs that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also provide helpful landmarks to aid navigation in coastal areas. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** The navigation-inspired architecture trend provides opportunities for architects to experiment with unconventional designs that prioritize both function and aesthetics. - **Interior Design:** The nautical-feel interiors trend provides opportunities for interior designers to create unique themes that highlight wooden surfaces and arched ceilings. - **Coastal Navigation:** The bright-colored houses trend provides opportunities for coastal navigation by serving as unique landmarks that aid in navigation. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Coastal Island Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pasparakisfriel.md) - [Coastal-Inspired Home Interiors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/casa-puerto.md) - [Discrete Lakeside Modern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/palissade.md) - [Eclectic Coastal Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ysg-byron-bay.md) - [Eccentric Australian Seaside Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ysg.md) - [Landscape-Honoring Modern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/des-forges-residence.md) - [Water-Surrounded Summer Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/whistling-wind-island.md) - [Coastal Bright Red Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/handegrd-arkitektur.md) - [Contemporary Mountainous Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mountainous-home.md)
