# Stretchy Coiled Shelving This Magazine Rack by John Quan is Reminiscent of the Slinky By Gil Cohen | Published 2013-06-19 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/magazine-rack References: [cutesign.tumblr](http://cutesign.tumblr.com/post/53096320430/a-very-flexible-magazine-rack-designed-by-john) & [johnquan.au](http://www.johnquan.com.au/) Designer John Quan infuses his magazine rack design with a youthful playfulness that reminds us to smile each day and interact with the things we surround ourselves with. In this case, the rack is shaped very much like a slinky, the retro toys many people reminisce about from childhoods when touch-screens were found only in Sci-Fi movies. Adults who don't have much room for useless toys lying around their home creating unnecessary clutter will find that this design introduces a bit of fun and whimsy back into their lives while providing the practicality needed from household objects. The flexible shape allows you to contort the unit into several different lengths so you can store CDs, magazines, books and important documents. The John Quan magazine rack is made from sleek plywood. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.6/10 - Popularity: 3% | Activity: 8% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Flexible Furniture Design:** Designers can create furniture and shelving solutions that are playful and practical by using flexible materials. - **Mixing Function and Fun:** There is a market for products that bring joy and creativity into daily routines with practical design features. - **Retro Nostalgia:** Bringing back elements of the past with modern design can appeal to audiences of all ages who crave playful, vintage-inspired products. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Design:** Designers can innovate in the furniture industry by exploring the use of flexible materials in their products. - **Home Decor:** Home decor companies can develop products that bring nostalgia, fun, and practicality into homes with clever design features. - **Office Supplies:** Companies in the office supplies industry can create products that add a touch of personality and creativity to workspaces, while still being functional. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Tubular Literature Storage Racks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interspace-magazine-rack.md) - [Book-Storing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookgroove-bookrack.md) - [Tripod-Like Garment Racks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/multifunctional-coat-rack.md) - [Sandbox-Like Modular Storage Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-storage-cabinet1.md) - [Dynamic Storage-Display Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelf-life.md) - [Twisting Donut-Shaped Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hullabaloo-bookshelf.md) - [Toy Block-Inspired Wooden Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rotating-picture-book.md) - [Minimal Storage Tray Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spiral-tray.md) - [Modular Contemporary Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/qurv.md)
