# Tree House Abodes This London House Blends Into Its Environment By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-11-01 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/london-house References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2014/10/31/ian-mcchesney-sydenham-house-south-london-black-glass-facade/) & [mcchesney](http://www.mcchesney.co.uk/) This London house by architect Ian McChesney might not resemble the tree house of your childhood fantasies, but it will definitely become the 'Tree House' of your adult homeowner dreams. McChesney used opaque glass cladding in order to reflect the stucco and brick facades of nearby houses, as well as foliage from a neighboring park. The polished black glass was purposefully chosen for its ability to blend with the natural surroundings. Completing the five-bedroom home was no easy task, however; McChensey had 68 objections filed against him during the building process. The residents of the area wished for something "striking" to be built in the plot, prompting McChesney to opt for a simple, crisp form made from two volumes connected by a butterfly roof. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.5/10 - Popularity: 96% | Activity: 92% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Eco-friendly Architecture:** The use of opaque glass cladding in eco-friendly architecture can provide energy-efficient solutions while blending with natural surroundings. - **Disruptive Building Techniques:** Innovative construction techniques like connecting two volumes through a butterfly roof can create striking architectural designs. - **Contemporary Tree House Design:** Contemporary tree house designs that blend in with their environment can offer unique and desirable living spaces. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** The use of eco-friendly elements in architecture like opaque glass cladding and butterfly roofs can offer sustainable and impactful building techniques. - **Real Estate:** Incorporating innovative and sustainable features in contemporary home designs like butterfly roofs can entice homebuyers looking for unique living spaces. - **Urban Planning:** Incorporating eco-friendly and visually striking designs like the use of opaque glass cladding and butterfly roofs can contribute to enhancing the visual appeal and sustainability of urban areas. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Apple Tree-Surrounding Glass Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/acdf.md) - [Vaulted Structural Telescopic Treehouse](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/artistree-home.md) - [Contemporary Conservationist Treehouses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sylvascope-treehouse.md) - [Living Landscape Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hedge-and-arbour-house.md) - [Forest Lantern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/iside-home.md) - [Glass‑brick Belgian Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glass-brick-house.md) - [Tranquil A‑Frame Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/steel-a-frame.md) - [Leaf-Inspired Countryside Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/leaf-house-1.md) - [Slatted Steel Treehouse Surroundings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sawmill-treehouse.md)
