# Self-Sustaining Rooftop Hotel Rooms The Living Roof Provides Guests With Eco-Luxury Accomodations By Michael Hines | Published 2011-05-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/living-roof References: [bornrich](http://www.bornrich.com/entry/living-roof-a-futuristic-rooftop-capsule-for-the-eco-conscious/) & [arch.nau.coop](http://arch.nau.coop/#/future-design/living-roof/LivingRoof_02) Rooms on the top floor of hotels are often the most luxurious and lavish, but what about rooms on the roof? Typically, they are nonexistent, but [NAU](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nola-lamp) is trying to change that with the Living Roof. The Living Roof is a luxurious mini-pod designed for the roofs of hotels. The Living Roof is self-sustaining, featuring [wind turbines and photovoltaic panels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/e55000) that provide all of its power. Even the water systems are self-sustaining as they source rain water from outside. NAU envisions these hotels in different locations throughout the world's major cities, with the locations changing every two years in order to keep things fresh. Rooftop hotel pods are nothing new -- London will have its very own during the 2012 Summer Olympics -- but luxury rooftop hotel pods that are self-sustaining haven't been seen before. It won't be long now before the top rooms at hotels become budget suites. The real party's on the roof, people. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.2/10 - Popularity: 61% | Activity: 57% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Self-sustaining Rooftop Hotel Pods:** The Living Roof introduces a trend of luxurious hotel pods on rooftops that are self-sustaining with wind turbines and photovoltaic panels. - **Eco-luxury Accommodations:** The Living Roof represents a trend of eco-friendly and luxurious accommodation options that source rainwater and utilize renewable energy sources. - **Changing Locations for Fresh Experiences:** NAU's vision of rotating the locations of rooftop hotel pods every two years taps into a trend of offering fresh and unique experiences to travelers. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Hospitality:** The hospitality industry can take advantage of the trend by incorporating self-sustaining rooftop hotel pods to provide unique and eco-friendly accommodation options to guests. - **Renewable Energy:** The renewable energy industry has an opportunity to collaborate with rooftop hotel pod developers in implementing wind turbines and photovoltaic panels to power the pods. - **Travel and Tourism:** The travel and tourism industry can benefit from the trend by promoting eco-luxury accommodations like the Living Roof as a unique selling point for their destinations. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sky-Based Hotel Aircrafts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nuclearpowered-sky-hotel.md) - [Autonomous Vehicle Hotels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lexus-solounge.md) - [Shapeshifting Outer Space Hotels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/acromnia-orbital-hotel.md) - [Prefab Timber Pods](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forest-nests-treepod-project.md) - [Carbon-Positive Dynamic Hotels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/populus-hotel.md) - [Solar Powered Compact Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/e55000.md) - [Climate-Responsive Prefab Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drop-pod.md) - [Hotel-Based Garden Terraced Columns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pan-pacific-orchard.md) - [Mobile Otherworldly Hotel Vehicles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tesla-mobile-resort-hotel.md)
