# Library-Themed Homes This Remodelled Library Keeps its Original Charm By Christopher Magsambol | Published 2015-09-01 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/librarythemed References: [freshome](http://freshome.com/bookshelves-throughout-define-the-library-house-in-portland-usa?utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=webfeeds) & [jhinteriordesign](http://www.jhinteriordesign.com/residential-projects/library-house/) An [old library in Portland](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portland-house-renovation) has been converted to a library-themed home. Designer Jessica Helgerson opted to infuse the building's old charm in the now reclaimed space. The library-themed inspiration is evident throughout, with bookshelves spread out all over the house, including the kitchen, dinning and living rooms. There is also a traditional library ladder to further reinforce the home's origins. The structure's original high ceilings were also maintained, further emphasizing the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Although the traditional foundation was kept, Helgerson incorporated many modern elements including large art pieces, a [hanging fireplace](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hearth-house), and contemporary light fixtures. Because of the large living space, many of the home's other rooms are smaller. The basement was also extended to create space for a sauna, laundry room and exercise room. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.8/10 - Popularity: 76% | Activity: 60% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Library-themed Homes:** Designers are incorporating the old charm and aesthetic of libraries into homes and public spaces, potentially creating new opportunities in the real estate and interior design industries. - **Maximizing Space in Homes:** Creating smaller rooms and extending basements to create additional space in homes could ignite innovation in construction and renovation industries. - **Blending Traditional and Modern Elements:** The combination of traditional library features with modern design elements in homes, offices, and public spaces presents opportunities to inject new life into heritage spaces. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Real Estate:** Incorporating library-themed features into homes could increase demand for real estate professionals to locate and/or create unique properties for interested buyers. - **Interior Design:** Designing library-themed homes involves combining modern elements with traditional features, potentially opening up new markets for professional interior designers. - **Construction and Renovation:** Maximizing space in homes and blending traditional and modern elements requires innovative solutions from experts in the construction and renovation industries. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Wood-Wrapped Contemporary Libraries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/graded-school-library.md) - [Children's Story-Inspired Libraries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/western-academy.md) - [Book-Filled Mezzanine Lofts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dumbo-loft.md) - [Memory-Grounded School Libraries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rahmah-library.md) - [Tree-Like Library Spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forest-of-knowledge.md) - [House Renovation Projects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hearth-house.md) - [Hotel-Inspired Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amsterdam-zuid.md) - [Converted Industrial Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/1960s-warehouse.md) - [Reimagined Postmodern Residence](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alder-house.md)
