# Curvy Climbing Escalators The 'Levytator' is the World's First Sinuous Electric Staircase By Amelia Roblin | Published 2010-09-29 | Unique Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/levytator References: [gizmodo](http://gizmodo.com/5649853/the-levytator-is-a-curvy-twisty-bendy-free) & [city.ac.uk](http://www.city.ac.uk/news/archive/2010/09_Sept/230910.html) Invented by Jack Levy of the City University of London, the 'Levytator' is the world's first sinuous escalator, designed based on a surprisingly simple concept. Using a [continuous loop of steps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/looptheloop-boat), the 'Levytator' consists of both an [up and a down staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rampey), making the entire system more efficient than preexisting designs. Each tread is formed as a curve, enabling the [easy turning of corners](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/qrevo-curvx) that give the 'Levytator' its meandering mastery, whether ascending, descending or traveling level. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.8/10 - Popularity: 15% | Activity: 92% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Unique](https://www.trendhunter.com/unique) > [Inventions](https://www.trendhunter.com/inventions) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Sinuous Electric Staircases:** The invention of the 'Levytator' escalator opens up opportunities for the development of sinuous electric staircases that offer increased efficiency and seamless transportation experiences. - **Continuous Loop Step Systems:** The concept behind the 'Levytator' escalator paves the way for continuous loop step systems, revolutionizing the design and functionality of escalators. - **Efficient Corner-turning Designs:** The curved tread design of the 'Levytator' escalator introduces innovative ways to enhance efficiency in corner-turning designs, offering improved maneuverability and space optimization. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Escalator Manufacturing:** The 'Levytator' escalator innovation presents disruptive opportunities for the escalator manufacturing industry to develop more efficient and versatile escalator systems. - **Transportation Infrastructure:** The development of sinuous electric staircases like the 'Levytator' escalator expands possibilities in transportation infrastructure, providing innovative solutions for efficient movement in public spaces. - **Commercial Real Estate:** The implementation of continuous loop step systems in the form of sinuous electric staircases can transform the design of commercial real estate, offering unique and attractive architectural features. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Concrete Spiral Staircase Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cadenza.md) - [Elevated Leisure Habitats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elevated-leisure-habitat.md) - [Modern Glass Home Elevators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-homelift.md) - [Stair-Climbing Robotic Vacuums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ascender-robot.md) - [Accessible Space Travel Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/space-elevator-concept.md) - [Contemporary Folding Ladders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/scaleo.md) - [Elevator-Inspired Cozy Sofa Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lift-sofa.md) - [Sculptural Experimental Artforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ladder-series.md) - [All-Terrain Electric Wheelchairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/scewo-bro.md)
