# Levitating Light Bulbs Chris Rieger Presents a Bright Take on an Old Idea By Marina Rotharmel | Published 2012-07-12 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/levitating-light-bulbs References: [neatorama](http://www.neatorama.com/2012/07/10/levitating-light/) & [geeks.thedailywh.at](http://geeks.thedailywh.at/2012/07/09/geek-news-levitating-light-bulb-of-the-day/) The levitating light bulb by Chris Rieger is something straight from the Jetsons. Chris Rieger from Queensland, Australia, is an Electrical Engineering student and the first person to really one up Thomas Edison’s original design. The light bulb is as Rieger says in his [YouTube](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diy-terrarium1) video, “a combination of a magnetic wireless power transfer system and a [magnetic levitation control system](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spot-on-charger).” Rieger uses powerful magnets that are attached to the light power system, which is then placed underneath another set of magnets. The device is then able to float freely in the air. Reiger uses a 3 watt LED light to display the futuristic device. His levitation device is not just a funky light fixture, but a prototype for other [small objects to levitate](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hoverpen-traverse). Maybe the hovercraft is closer than previously expected. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.9/10 - Popularity: 16% | Activity: 33% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Gadgets](https://www.trendhunter.com/gadgets) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Magnetic Levitation:** Exploring the use of magnetic levitation technology in various applications. - **Wireless Power Transfer:** Developing innovative ways to transfer power wirelessly for increased convenience and efficiency. - **Futuristic Lighting Solutions:** Creating new and visually stunning light fixtures using advanced technologies. ### Where This Applies - **Electrical Engineering:** Leveraging magnetic levitation and wireless power transfer to revolutionize electrical engineering practices. - **Home Decor:** Integrating futuristic lighting solutions into home decor to create unique and captivating environments. - **Consumer Electronics:** Incorporating magnetic levitation and wireless power transfer into consumer electronics for enhanced functionality and aesthetics. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Space-Inspired Hovering Pens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/levitating-pen-30.md) - [Levitating Dynamic Ring Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/levitos.md) - [Chic Saucer-Shaped Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/light-in-tight-light-fixture.md) - [Floating LED Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/poof-light.md) - [Galactic-Themed Pen Holders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ufo-desk-pen.md) - [Floating Spherical Speakers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alex-casabo.md) - [3D-Printed Mood Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orbyt.md) - [Dazzling Gradient Lighting Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/star-bulb.md) - [Floating Futuristic Writing Utensils](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/levitating-pen.md)
