It seems like it would be only a matter of time before it fell down, perhaps pinning someone to the wall like Ralston was nearly a decade ago. Commissioned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Levitated Mass installation was created by artist Michael Heizer. In addition to the [stone](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drifting-stones), Heizer also replaced the green lawn with dry, sun-blasted expanse of decomposed granite to create the illusion of a barren desert cutting through an [urban landscape](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-lucas-museum-of-narrative-arts). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.1/10 - Popularity: 88% | Activity: 87% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Unique](https://www.trendhunter.com/unique) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Precarious Boulder Installations:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop new engineering techniques and materials to safely create and maintain precarious boulder installations as a unique form of outdoor art. - **Anxiously Wondrous Sculptures:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore the combination of anxiety-inducing elements with awe-inspiring artistic creations to evoke strong emotional responses in viewers. - **Urban Desert Landscapes:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Design and develop artificial desert landscapes within urban areas to provide a unique and immersive experience for city dwellers. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art Installations:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Merge the worlds of art and engineering to create innovative and dynamic installations that challenge traditional notions of balance and stability. - **Outdoor Recreation:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop new outdoor adventure activities and experiences that incorporate precarious boulder installations, appealing to adrenaline-seeking consumers. - **Urban Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Integrate desert-inspired landscapes into urban planning and architecture to create visually striking and ecologically sustainable urban environments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sculptural Gravity Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-bench.md) - [UK-Based Modern Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/relics-in-the-landscape.md) - [Generational-Lasting Dynamic Playgrounds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mike-hewson-2.md) - [Large-Scale Sculpture Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/desert-x1.md) - [Gas Rig Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/striking-art-installation.md) - [Cave-Inspired Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cave-bureau.md) - [Nature-Inspired Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/humannature-1.md) - [Lightning-Inspired Artful Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bright-light-shining.md) - [Interactive Mountain Oracles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/whispering-mountains.md)
