# Songbird Sanctuaries Laysan Island Has Been Donated for Exclusive Use by Millerbirds By Omar Yusuf | Published 2011-09-24 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/laysan-island References: [treehugger](http://www.treehugger.com/files/2011/09/24-endangered-birds-gifted-their-own-hawaiian-island.php) & [bymnews](http://www.bymnews.com/news/newsDetails.php?id=92255) Twenty-four lucky contestants have won the exclusive property and land rights to Laysan Island, a quaint tropical refuge on the outer span of Hawaii's archipelago chain. The reason why this particular contest is so unique is because the contestants aren't people, but [endangered birds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/birdaid). The emerging plans for the picturesque Laysan Island have been hatched by a consortium formed by the [U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/protect-sea-turtles), the [American Bird Conservancy](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/joby-air-taxi) and a myriad of other conservation groups. Twenty-four Millerbirds -- all that remains of the once-abundant species -- have been relocated to the island, where they'll be free to feed, fly and mate in the hopes of stabilizing their population. Joining the K-T Meteor that annihilated the dinosaurs and the Ice Age, humanity is responsible for the current worldwide extinction event. Environmentally aware initiatives like this may be all that prevent our fellow Earthlings from going the way of the T-Rex. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.5/10 - Popularity: 6% | Activity: 1% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Endangered Species Conservation:** Creating sanctuaries for endangered species to stabilize and increase their population. - **Environmental Awareness Initiatives:** Initiatives to prevent further extinction events and protect biodiversity. - **Tropical Refuge Conservation:** Preserving and maintaining tropical refuges as habitats for endangered species. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Wildlife Conservation:** Opportunities for organizations to develop and manage sanctuaries for endangered species. - **Ecotourism:** Developing sustainable tourism activities and experiences in tropical refuges. - **Environmental Education:** Providing education and awareness programs about the importance of conservation and biodiversity. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Targeted Bird Seed Blends](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cool-birds.md) - [Elusive Heron-Finding Tours](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/birding-tour.md) - [AI Bird Identifying Devices](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bird-weather.md) - [Hollow Terracotta Pillared Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/biodiversity-island.md) - [Bioacoustics Products](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/haiku-box.md) - [Bioaccoustic Wildlife Monitoring](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/soundscapes-to-landscapes.md) - [Monarch Butterfly-Inspired Digital Billboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/endangered-species-series.md) - [Eco-Friendly Island Paradises](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/corona-island-1.md) - [Educational Linoleum Birdhouses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elvi-birdhouse.md)
