# Wire Shadow Structures Larry Kagan Creates Figures Out of Twisted Bits of Metal By Jordy E | Published 2013-03-28 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/larry-kagan References: [mymodernmet](http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/larry-kagan-shadow-drawings) & [larrykagansculpture](http://larrykagansculpture.com/) Artist Larry Kagan's [wire structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/reflector-sculpture) give off the appearance of various shapes by way of shadows. When light hits the wires at precise angles, viewers get to take in airplanes, maps of the world, eagles, coffee cups, bugs and chairs. These familiar objects literally shine through Kagan's work with precision. Although shadows, they nonetheless relay exact replicas of that which he aims to depict. He maintains a strident interest in his chosen art medium, "My challenge was to induce viewers to actually look at the shadow rather than solely at the [steel](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/facet-collection). I began shifting more of the narrative burden to shadow." This stands in direct contrast to most who simply pass by shadows without much thought. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.0/10 - Popularity: 44% | Activity: 68% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Shadow Art Trend:** Larry Kagan's wire shadow structures showcase the potential of shadow art to create realistic figures using light and wire. - **Precision Lighting Trend:** Kagan's wire shadows rely on precise lighting angles to create distinct shapes, demonstrating the value of precision lighting in art and design. - **Narrative-shifting Trend:** Kagan shifts the narrative burden to the shadow with his wire structures, showcasing a trend towards playing with perspective and challenging traditional ways of viewing art. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art and Design Industry:** Kagan's wire shadow structures are a disruptive innovation opportunity in the art and design industry, exploring new ways of playing with light, shadow and perspective to create striking works. - **Lighting Industry:** Kagan's work highlights the luxury and artistic potential of precise lighting, which could be a disruptive innovation opportunity for the lighting industry to merge art and technology. - **Marketing and Advertising Industry:** The narrative-shifting trend showcased in Kagan's work could inspire marketing and advertising professionals to explore new ways to shift consumer perspectives and challenge traditional branding strategies. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Artful Suspended Fashion Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/invisible-figures.md) - [Sun-Lit Kite-Inspired Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cygnet-light.md) - [Nature-Inspired Minimal Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/capture-the-light.md) - [Elegant Metal Perforated Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/foreshadow-table-lamp.md) - [Desert Reflective Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shadow-travelling.md) - [Shimmering Cantilevered Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/2023-shadow-chair.md) - [Organically Shaped Shadow Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loops-lamp.md) - [Illuminated Curtained Light Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/making-the-invisible-visible.md) - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md)
