# DIY Laptop Stands Mike Davis Forewent Typical Laptop Mounts in Favor of His Own Stand By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2015-02-03 | Autos Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/laptop-mounts References: [lifehacker](http://lifehacker.com/5312703/turn-your-cars-cup-holder-into-a-laptop-stand) & [mdpub](http://www.mdpub.com/laptoptray/index.html) Those who don't want to spend money on auto accessories such as laptop mounts can fashion their own DIY version using their vehicle's existing cup holder. Mike Davis needed a way to use his laptop safely and securely while driving in his truck. Unable to afford the commercial laptop stands, which retailed for about $300, Davis decided to transform his center console into a base upon which his laptop could rest. He decided to share the wealth, making his successful DIY experiment available online for others in a similar situation. To make, users need to invest in PVC pipes, fittings and plywood sheets, which can be purchased for around $30. The step-by-step instructions (and pictures) are available on Davis' site. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.3/10 - Popularity: 90% | Activity: 92% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Autos](https://www.trendhunter.com/autos) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **DIY Laptop Stands:** Opportunity for individuals to create their own laptop stands using affordable materials. - **Affordable Auto Accessories:** A trend of finding affordable alternatives to expensive auto accessories, such as laptop mounts. - **Online DIY Community:** A growing online community of DIY enthusiasts sharing their innovative creations. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Automotive Accessories:** Opportunity for automotive accessory brands to create affordable and customizable laptop mounts. - **Home Improvement:** Opportunity for home improvement retailers to offer affordable materials for DIY laptop stand projects. - **Online Communities:** Opportunity for online platforms to provide a space where DIY enthusiasts can connect, share ideas, and showcase their creations. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [In-Car Work Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/foldable-lap-desk.md) - [Highly Portable Laptop Stands](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/maxtand-20.md) - [Lightweight Aluminum Laptop Stands](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/native-union-fold.md) - [Saddle-Style Vehicle Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/daylodge-workspace.md) - [Collapsible Laptop Holder Stands](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portable-macbook-stand.md) - [Elevated Rotating Laptop Stands](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/casa-hub.md) - [Connectivity Hub Laptop Mounts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hyperdrive-hub-stand.md) - [Haute Tubular Laptop Stands](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookarc-flex-macbook-stand.md) - [Portable Professional Standing Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portable-laptop-stand-desk.md)
