# Sprawling Terrace Homes The Highlight of This Lakeside Reside Lies in the Rooftop Terrace By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-09-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lakeside-residence References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2014/08/29/le-grand-plateau-house-atelier-pierre-thibault-raised-stilts-forest-view-quebec/) & [atelier.pthibault](http://atelier.pthibault.com/) Canadian architecture firm Atelier Pierre Thibault designed the 'Le Grand Plateau House,' a lakeside residence located in a forest outside of Quebec, Canada. The home is intended as a holiday retreat for a couple who is recently retired. The principal element of the design is the fact that the home is [elevated on slim metal stilts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monterey-home). The house is also blanketed by a [terrace that covers the whole roof](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-under-the-poplars), allowing greater access to the charming views of the Laurentides region. The main objective for this design was to give the home the appearance of a "grand plateau that would seem to be [floating on a very steep hillside](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/b2a-architects)." In the center, a lounge area paneled with glass, allows visitors to take in the views from a safely shaded vantage point. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.1/10 - Popularity: 45% | Activity: 9% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Elevated Homes:** Designing homes on elevated metal stilts with a terrace on the roof to offer better views - an opportunity for architects to create unique homes while preserving natural landscapes. - **Rooftop Terraces:** Adding a terrace on the roof of homes, especially in scenic locations - an opportunity for construction companies to offer new building options that prioritize outdoor living spaces. - **Holiday Retreats:** Designing holiday retreats like 'Le Grand Plateau House' for retired couples - an opportunity for hospitality and tourism businesses to offer personalized experiences for the niche market of retired couples. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Incorporating new design elements into the construction of homes - an opportunity to create more visually appealing, sustainable, and functional homes. - **Construction:** Offering unique building options such as rooftop terraces and elevated homes - an opportunity for construction companies to appeal to niche markets and differentiate themselves from competitors. - **Hospitality and Tourism:** Designing holiday retreats for specific customer segments, such as retired couples - an opportunity for businesses in the hospitality and tourism industry to tap into niche markets and offer tailored experiences. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Thoughtful Lakeside Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lakeside-living.md) - [Timber-Clad Canadian Holiday Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/la-cime.md) - [Terraced Tiny Living](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-park.md) - [Contemporary Mountainous Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mountainous-home.md) - [Discrete Lakeside Modern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/palissade.md) - [Elevated Mountain Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/la-cadree-perche.md) - [Dramatic Roof-Topped Ontario Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ridge-house.md) - [Stepped Hillside Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/b2a-architects.md) - [Lakeside Family Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/muskoka-lakeside-cottage.md)
