Kariouk Associates designed the 'Mulvagh-Crosby Cottage,' a [remote lakeside cottage](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/palissade) located in Ladysmith, Quebec.

The cottage replaces a family cottage that had been passed down in the clients' family, generation to generation, for more than seventy years. To indulge the clients' sentimentality, the new cottage was to be built in the same exact location, and have the exact same dimensions, as the former structure. The architects were challenged with creating an open spatial arrangement and translating the aesthetic of the original home into a more contemporary architectural language.

To minimize labor costs on the project, the architects opted for prefabricated materials such as [Cross Laminated Timber](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chalet-vale-perkins) and [cross-wise black sprucewood boards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smoke-lake-cabin). Inside the home, the walls were alternatively left unfinished, a decision which was made to preserve the "full richness" of the material and add warmth to the interior.
