A software program was recently developed by US computer scientists at the [University of California](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nightshade) San Diego that can make copies of keys without the real thing. They can duplicate merely from photos, taken using even cell phone cameras, and from hundreds of feet away. Sophisticated digital imaging and optics available today makes it all possible. The researchers are not revealing the source code of their program, but their work is a clear wake-up call for all of us to [guard our keys like credit cards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/antifraud-solution). The lead scientist, Stefan Savage, also warned people not to upload pictures which show their keys on [public sites like Flickr](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pixduplicate). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.8/10 - Popularity: 2% | Activity: 45% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Mobile](https://www.trendhunter.com/mobile) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Key Cloning:** Key duplication technology is advancing, creating opportunity for new security measures and services. - **Digital Imaging and Optics:** Advancements in digital imaging and optics are enabling new applications for key duplication and beyond. - **Personal Security:** As key cloning becomes more accessible, there is a growing need for innovative solutions to enhance personal security. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Security:** The security industry has an opportunity to develop new products and services to protect against key cloning threats. - **Digital Imaging:** Digital imaging companies can explore new applications for key duplication technology, potentially disrupting the key industry. - **Tech:** As advancements in technology continue, the tech industry has the potential to disrupt traditional security measures with innovative solutions. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Antitheft Car Key Carriers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/car-key-faraday-shield.md) - [Adaptable Key Lock Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/advanced-rekey.md) - [Ultra-Secure Connected Door Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/netatmo-smart-door-lock-and-keys.md) - [Palm-Recognizing Smart Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/phillips-palmlock.md) - [Discreet File Security Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/secret-photo-vault.md) - [Pocket-Sized Safety Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gaze.md) - [High-Tech Residential Security Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/residential-security-system.md) - [Residential Property Fraud Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/residential-property-fraud.md) - [Passkey Readiness Trackers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/state-of-passkeys.md)
