The system is paired with a heavy-duty steel pump piston to eliminate the need for powered alternatives and has reinforced housing to maximize durability. The system has a field-cleanable [ceramic and activated carbon filters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/viomi-v8), and can be used with a [hollow fiber membrane for removing viruses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/water-purification-appliance). Users can outfit the unit with all of the components right from the start or add them in later thanks to the modular design. The Katadyn Explorer system is rated to deliver a flow rate of one liter per minute, while the ceramic filter is rated for 20,000-liters of use, the carbon filter treats 500-liters and the virus membrane lasts for 10,000-liters.
