# Extraordinary Unfolding Furnishings The Kai Table Unlatches and Unhinges to Reveal Hidden Cabinets By Amelia Roblin | Published 2011-12-02 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kai-table References: [designspotter](http://www.designspotter.com/product/2011/12/LINUM-Series.html) & [hirakoso.jp](http://www.hirakoso.jp/works/kai_table.html) Furniture with [built-in storage space](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chunks-and-blocks) is exceedingly underrated, making objects like the Kai Table heaven-sent for any sitting room. At 900 centimeters in length and width alike, this [clever coffee table](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-coffee-tables) flips into about a dozen unexpected trap doors that provide access into the piece's hollow interior. The soft light wood that makes up the Kai Table has been cut cleanly and precisely to make the object look seamless from just a short distance away. However, a few simple adjustments to hidden hinged cupboards, slide-out panels, pull-out cubbyholes and drawers uncover what looks more like a magnified three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle. The Kai Table was custom-designed by Naoki Hirakoso and Takamitsu Kitahara, infused with quirky personality and incredible craftsmanship. Just think of how the charming piece will manage the clutter of books, DVDs, electronics and toys! ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.2/10 - Popularity: 87% | Activity: 91% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Built-in Storage Furnishings:** The Kai Table exemplifies built-in storage furnishings, with potential for expansion in the furniture market. - **Clever Space-saving Furniture:** Furniture that cleverly saves space, like the Kai Table, offers disruptive innovation opportunities for small apartments and homes. - **Seamless Hidden Compartments:** The seamless design and hidden compartments of the Kai Table inspire innovative furniture designs in the luxury market. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture:** The Kai Table presents opportunities for furniture makers and designers to incorporate space-saving and built-in storage features into their products. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can use the Kai Table as inspiration to provide clients with space-saving and multi-functional furniture options. - **Luxury Home Goods:** The Kai Table's precise craftsmanship and seamless design indicate potential for disruption in the luxury home goods industry through the incorporation of hidden compartments and built-in storage. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Discreet Compartment Modern Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/taarof-table.md) - [Adaptive Furniture Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/expand-furniture.md) - [Dynamic Sculptural Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-transformation-table.md) - [Minimalist Book Storage Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocket-coffee-table.md) - [Bookshelf-Incorporated Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/overlap-table.md) - [Spinning Storage Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diy-spinning-coffee-table.md) - [Compact Functional Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookmarker-table.md) - [Japandi-Style Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cloth-coffee-table.md) - [Möbius Strip-Inspired Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mbelius-coffee-table.md)
