# Curvaceous Wooden Lighting John Procario Bends and Reshapes Wood to Create Artistic Illuminators By Michael Hines | Published 2013-07-10 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/john-procario References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2013/07/08/lamps-by-john-procario/) & [johnprocario](http://johnprocario.com/) John Procario is an American designer who is doing some amazing things with wood. Procario has created [wooden lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flatpack-timber-lamp) that bend in a most unnatural way. The lamps are designed to mimic the human body in the sense that our limbs can be extremely flexible, but at a certain point our bones will break and our muscles will tear. The designer creates his lamps using strips of ash wood and white oak. The wood is then put into a steam box where it becomes malleable and flexible. Procario then joins the wood together and laminates it, installing [LED lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loops-lamp) after the body of the lamp has formed. John Procario's lamps are like none other, and are as much a work of art as they are a piece of lighting. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.1/10 - Popularity: 57% | Activity: 29% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Home](https://www.trendhunter.com/home) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Curvaceous Lighting:** Using malleable strips of wood to create flexible, organic lighting designs. - **Flexible Wooden Design:** Exploring new ways to bend and reshape wood, offering possibilities for furniture and decor design as well as lighting. - **Body-inspired Lamps:** Taking inspiration from the human body to create unique and organic light fixtures with a sculptural quality. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Lighting Design:** Innovative lighting designers can experiment with malleable materials, like wood, to create unique and artistic pieces that also serve as functional lighting. - **Furniture Design:** Designers can experiment with new techniques for bending and shaping wood, opening up new avenues in furniture design. - **Art and Sculpture:** Procario's approach to functional lighting as a form of art can inspire other artists to create sculptural pieces that also light up a space. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Twisting Timber Lampshade Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twisted-lasercut-wooden-lampshade.md) - [Wooden Sustainable Table Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/woodo.md) - [Serene Wooden Dynamic Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sleepy-wood.md) - [Skateboarding-Inspired Wood Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blue-green-works.md) - [Wooden Pendant Lamp Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wood-collection-1.md) - [Timber Wood Handmade Lighting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/onu-series.md) - [Design-Focused Wooden Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-soul.md) - [Sculpted Wooden Desktop Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sleepy-wood-desk-lamp.md) - [Organically Inspired Light Fixtures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tom-rossau1.md)
