# Renovated Cottage Garden Extensions John Ellway Renovates a Cottage with New Extensions By Amy Duong | Published 2023-12-25 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/john-ellway References: [dezeen](https://www.dezeen.com/2023/12/23/john-ellway-hopscotch-house-brisbane-cottage/) & [jellway](https://www.jellway.com/) Local studio John Ellway updates a cottage located in Brisbane with new features that are meant to "encourage play and movement." It is defined by its [series of smaller gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hedge-and-arbour-house) and the extension is meant to add more lighthearted functions to the location. It rests on a low-rise estate in Woolloongabba and features five gardens -- all of which have their own character. This includes the neighborhood garden at the front which is more interactive or the more private '[secure courtyard](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blythe-hill-house)' at the back of the location. Ellway explains, "When extending a house in this city, the [existing timber structure](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/thornbury-house) is generally lifted into the air and built-in under – it is cheap and quick but destroys the streetscape of the last 100 years. The project engages with the street and neighborhood rather than turning its back."
