# Pink Apparition Art Joao Ruas Paints Haunting Images of Ghostly Flamingo-Hued Figures By Jason Soy | Published 2012-02-29 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/joao-ruas1 References: [artforadults.tumblr](http://artforadults.tumblr.com/post/18445025090/by-joao-ruas-aka-feral-kid-brasil) Pink has never been more frightening than it is in these Joao Ruas illustrations. Drawing flamingo-hued [ghostly apparitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/junji-ito-artwork), the talented artist has re-contextualized the bright color that’s often associated with sweets, joy and femininity. Ruas renders his [pink-adorned subjects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/greyscale-gelato) with contrasting dull-colored backgrounds to enhance the visual effect of each piece, but it’s the characters he chooses to paint that really puts viewers at unease. One Joao Ruas illustration features Medusa floating weightlessly in a crouched position while balancing on a plant. The smeared and runny pink paint in this particular piece is evocative of blood, while the boils on Medusa’s body coupled with her physics defying pose puts viewers in a euphoric fantasy mind frame. Ruas’ other images have a similar effect on audiences thanks to his [surreal concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jeffrey-deitch-art-gallery). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.1/10 - Popularity: 83% | Activity: 63% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Ghostly Flamingo-hued Figures:** Opportunity to explore the use of unconventional colors and ethereal imagery in artistic and design ventures. - **Re-contextualizing Pink:** Opportunity to challenge traditional perceptions of pink and its associations, creating new and unexpected narratives. - **Surreal Concepts:** Opportunity to venture into the realm of surrealism and explore fantastical ideas in various creative industries. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art:** Opportunity for artists to experiment with unconventional color choices and create haunting and thought-provoking pieces. - **Design:** Opportunity to incorporate unconventional color palettes and evoke an ethereal atmosphere in graphic design, packaging, and branding. - **Fashion:** Opportunity to introduce unexpected and mysterious elements into fashion design, creating unique and captivating garments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Pink Tonal Shelving Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/reisinger-pink.md) - [Pink-Detailed Art Gallery Interiors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/superzoom.md) - [Surreal Love-Themed Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/joakim-ojanen.md) - [Pink-Tinted Artful Concept Stores](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moco-concept-store.md) - [Large-Scale Pink-Fabric Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/purple-hibiscus.md) - [Doll-Themed Pink Paints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pinkie.md) - [Apocalypse Post Pandemic Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contemporary-urban-art.md) - [Creature-Like Floor Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-pink-robots-won.md) - [Elevated Design-Forward Pink Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pink-villa1.md)
