Ruas studied in London from 2004-2007 before returning to his native Sao Paulo. His characters are mostly children and animals or human-animal hyprids with nuanced expressions, seemingly floating through a feral world. The images can come across as disturbing, but there is not a sense of fear in the subjects. The textures used by Joao Ruas are impeccable and precise and the color palette is dark and muted.
