# Miniature Matchbook Masterpieces Jason D'Aquino Creates Miniscule Art on Unlikely Canvasses By Sarah Moore | Published 2012-03-25 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jason-daquino References: [thatslikewhoa](http://thatslikewhoa.com/cool-mini-illustrations-on-matchbooks/) & [jasondaquino](http://www.jasondaquino.com/) Jason D'Aquino is a miniaturist that specializes in creating pieces that are usually no larger in size than one inch by one inch. Many of his pieces are drawn on objects that he comes across on his travels and he relies on these items to inspire him rather than purchasing conventional canvasses. His graphite illustrations on the inside of matchbook covers are amazingly detailed and proportionate, despite being created on such a small space. He has an exceptional hand for precision and many of his pieces are retro-inspired or referential to pop culture. The artist has etched everything on the matchbook covers from typewriters to pin-up girls to scenes from classic cult films such as 'The Shining.' The bite-sized work of Jason D'Aquino is interesting and insightful, without being overly contrived. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.5/10 - Popularity: 75% | Activity: 82% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Miniature Art:** Opportunity for creating highly-detailed artwork on unconventional canvases, such as matchbook covers, that can catch the attention of art enthusiasts. - **Retro-inspired Art:** Potential for incorporating nostalgic and pop culture elements into artwork, appealing to a niche market of collectors and fans. - **Precision Illustration:** Chance to showcase exceptional hand precision and attention to detail in miniature illustrations, attracting both art enthusiasts and professionals in related fields. ### Who This Affects Most - **Fine Art:** Innovation opportunities for artists to explore unconventional canvases and techniques, pushing the boundaries of what is considered traditional art. - **Collectibles:** Market potential for creating limited-edition miniature art pieces that cater to collectors, allowing for unique and valuable items with niche appeal. - **Graphic Design:** Opportunities for graphic designers to incorporate precision illustration techniques and retro-inspired elements in their work, adding a unique touch to branding and marketing materials. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Miniature Artful Hip-Hop Landmarks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/danny-cortes.md) - [Miniaturized Product Art Photographs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/small-muji.md) - [Limited Miniature Paintings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocket-paintings.md) - [Insect-Inspired Bronze Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/insect-bronze-sculptures.md) - [Love-Inspired Miniature Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/love-in-a-bottle.md) - [Miniature Baking Collectibles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mini-food.md) - [Miniature Collectible Campaigns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/worlds-smallest.md) - [Stunning Origami Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-portaits.md) - [Miniature Sub Sandwiches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/worls-smallest-sub.md)
