# Dessert-Decorated Restrooms This Giant Cake Bathroom is Part of a Japanese Toilet Festival By Charlotte Joyce Kidd | Published 2015-09-28 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/japanese-toilet References: [spoon-tamago](http://www.spoon-tamago.com/2015/09/10/melting-dream-toilennale-minako-nishiyama/) & [hyperallergic](http://hyperallergic.com/232913/japan-wipes-away-pretentiousness-with-art-festival-devoted-to-toilets/) This totally unusual public bathroom -- shaped either like a giant cake or a colossal ice cream sundae -- is part of a Japanese toilet festival in which artists create [public art installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/round-about-baths) that double as public restrooms. The round pink washroom hut is designed by artist Mika Kasahara. Titled 'Melting Dream,' the piece looks like a cartoon cake or dish of ice cream from the outside, covered in illuminated puffs of whip cream and round, red cherry-like orbs. On the inside, it contains several stalls, sinks and mirrors, as well as a [row of urinals](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modern-urinal-design) on a wall decorated with images of dessert. The decadent, [photo-realistic mural](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/looks-delicious) is covered in dripping icing and luscious fruits. The purpose of the Japanese toilet art piece, according to the artist, is to portray a dark subliminal eroticism that echoes the crumbling of Japanese culture after the Fukushima nuclear incident. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.1/10 - Popularity: 66% | Activity: 49% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Toilet Art Installations:** The trend of creating public art installations that serve as unique and eye-catching restrooms provides an opportunity for artists to showcase their creativity and contribute to cultural events. - **Dessert-inspired Restroom Design:** Designing restrooms to resemble desserts creates a playful and whimsical environment for users, offering a unique and memorable experience. - **Subliminal Eroticism in Art:** Exploring the concept of subliminal eroticism in art installations, such as the cake-shaped bathroom, allows for the expression of complex emotions and narratives. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art and Design:** The art and design industry can incorporate toilet art installations as a form of public art, providing artists a platform to showcase their work and attract visitors. - **Hospitality and Tourism:** The hospitality and tourism industry can utilize dessert-themed restroom designs to enhance guest experiences and create Instagrammable moments that attract more visitors. - **Cultural Events and Festivals:** Cultural events and festivals can feature dessert-inspired restrooms as an interactive and immersive art experience, adding a unique element to the festivities and attracting attendees. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Light-Filled Public Restrooms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vivid-toilet-interior.md) - [Enclosed Japanese Park Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/toiletowa.md) - [Artfully Sculptured Textured Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-formation-02.md) - [Brutalist Smart Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/formation-02.md) - [Multilayer Canned Cakes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/canned-cake.md) - [Branded Bathroom Guides](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cashmere-ultraluxe-bathroom-guide.md) - [Amorphous Public Restrooms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amoeba-public-restroom.md) - [Japanese Mountain Range Cakes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mt-fuji-chocolate-cake.md) - [Balloon Dog Cakes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balloon-dog-cake.md)
