The world renowned artist James Turrell was commissioned by [Rice University](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rice-university-1) in Houston, Texas to create this [beautiful sky space](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-landscape). Turrell has been working over the past four decades creating sky spaces worldwide, with this building being one of his largest. Officially opening this month, the pyramid-like structure serves as a multifaceted piece of art for the campus. Each day, the building provides two light shows working in correlation with the arc of the sun. The shows occur at sunrise and sunset, while visitors use the viewing area to look through a 14-by-14-foot opening at the sky. By staring up, visitors are taken away by the various [LED light colors being projected](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/immersive-lighting-experience) onto the building's ceiling. These lights work to influence how they see the sky during the sunrise and sunset. The project works to create a beautiful show that integrates nature and technology. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.0/10 - Popularity: 30% | Activity: 51% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Sky Space Shows:** The integration of technology and nature creates an opportunity for captivating sky space shows with LED lighting projected onto buildings. - **Multifaceted Art:** Creating art that serves multiple purposes, such as providing an immersive experience, inspires innovation in the art industry. - **Sun-responsive Design:** Designing buildings that incorporate sun-responsive features can create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art:** There is an opportunity for artists to incorporate innovative technology into their pieces to create immersive experiences. - **Architecture:** Architecture firms can incorporate sun-responsive designs in their buildings, creating intriguing and functional spaces. - **Entertainment:** Companies can create sky space shows that integrate technology and nature for an innovative and unique entertainment experience. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Eclipse-Themed Rooftop Artworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arc-zero.md) - [Immersive Light Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spencer-finch.md) - [Evening Sky-Inspired Lighting Fixtures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/evening-sky.md) - [Wonderous Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/your-psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md) - [Unique Interactive Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-aurora.md) - [Interactive Light Experience](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/every-wall-is-a-door.md) - [Lightning-Inspired Artful Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bright-light-shining.md) - [Immersive Light Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md) - [Circular Light Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shen-sculpture.md)
