# Intentionally Skewed Shelving The Ivy Shelf from Thomas Bernstrand By Michael Hines | Published 2011-02-22 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ivy-shelf References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2011/02/16/ivy-by-thomas-bernstrand-for-swedese/) & [bernstrand](http://www.bernstrand.com/) Throw everything you thought you knew about shelving out of the window before you check out the Ivy Shelf. Swedish designer Thomas Bernstrand has designed a [shelving system](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brickbox-modular-shelving) that is wonderfully customizable and functional. The Ivy Shelf is actually a set of shelves that can be [stacked upon one another](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ledoux-prt-collection) to form a crooked or straight shelf. Personally, I prefer the crooked version of the Ivy Shelf. I love it when designers can turn ordinary and often boring pieces of furniture (cough, shelves, cough) into eye-catching conversation starters. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.2/10 - Popularity: 26% | Activity: 33% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Customizable Shelving:** Designing shelving systems that can be customized and adapted to different shapes and configurations. - **Functional Furniture:** Creating furniture that serves a practical purpose while also being visually appealing and engaging. - **Conversation Starters:** Developing furniture designs that stand out and spark conversations due to their unique and interesting characteristics. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Opportunity for furniture manufacturers to create customizable shelving systems that offer unique and practical solutions for consumers. - **Interior Design:** Opportunity for interior designers to incorporate functional and visually interesting furniture pieces like the Ivy Shelf into their projects to create unique and engaging spaces. - **Home Decor Retail:** Opportunity for home decor retailers to offer customers customizable and conversation-starting shelving options, attracting a niche market seeking unique and eye-catching pieces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Abstract Jigsaw-Like Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spectator-shelf.md) - [Modular Contemporary Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/qurv.md) - [Living Storage Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/treevive.md) - [Modular Grid-Style Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bend-shelf-by-spenser-atlas.md) - [L-Shaped Stacked Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loft-shelf.md) - [Customizable Style-Conscious Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ledoux-modular-shelf-system.md) - [Adaptable Flat-Pack Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-pack-shelving.md) - [Folding Steel Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pli-steel-wall-shelf.md) - [Room-Dividing Bookshelf Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frquence-shelf.md)
