# Floating Isle Sculptures The 'Is Land' Installation is Lost After Someone Cut the Strings By Meghan Young | Published 2011-08-06 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/is-land References: [neatorama](http://www.neatorama.com/2011/08/05/runaway-floating-island/) & [telegraph](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/8678759/Search-is-on-for-missing-floating-island.html) Although islands don't go missing too often (forget about the pop culture TV show phenomenon 'Lost' for a second), that is just what the Is Land art installation managed to do on July 24, 2011. A stunning sculpture on its own, it is now making headlines around the world as people search the skies for this runaway island. Created by Sarah Cockings and Laurence Symonds, recent [Royal College of Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-kinetic-sculptures) graduates, the Is Land installation was deployed at the [Secret Garden Party](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-shelf) music festival in Cambridgeshire, England. The approximately $14,500 (£9,000) [helium-filled sculpture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forest-dancer) measures 7 meters wide and looks like one of those floating islands from James Cameron's 'Avatar' movie. 'Is Land' is made of durable polyurethane with foliage decor and was built over six months. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.1/10 - Popularity: 20% | Activity: 34% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Missing Island Art:** Opportunity for immersive art installations that captivate and generate buzz. - **Helium Sculptures:** Potential for innovative art installations using helium-filled sculptures. - **Avatar-inspired Art:** Opportunity for artists to create installations inspired by popular movies and engage with a wider audience. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art Installation:** The art installation industry can explore new ways to create immersive and captivating experiences. - **Event Planning:** Opportunity for event planners to incorporate unique art installations to enhance the overall experience. - **Film Industry:** Film production companies and set designers can explore new avenues of creating visually stunning environments based on popular movies. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Monumental Air Installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/iwagumi-air-scape.md) - [Gas Rig Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/striking-art-installation.md) - [Interactive Kinetic Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-kinetic-sculptures.md) - [Musical Island Regeneration](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/soundscape-1.md) - [Orb Lighting Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mangrove-island.md) - [Island-Inspired Wooden Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/island-table.md) - [UK-Based Modern Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/relics-in-the-landscape.md) - [Spiky Inflatable Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/inflatable-sculptures1.md) - [Colorfully Inflatable Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blowup-art-the-hague.md)
