# Cord-Coiling Backup Boxes The IRIVER Stone Hard Drive Declutters Your Desk Environment By Amelia Roblin | Published 2011-09-06 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/iriver-stone-hard-drive References: [industrialdesignserved](http://www.industrialdesignserved.com/gallery/IRIVER-Stone-Hard-Drive/950679) Function over Form is often the motto to which electronics developers stick, rarely thinking outside of the box -- literally. The IRIVER Stone Hard Drive is far from rectangular and it even integrates an additional feature which improves its physical efficiency. Matt Day sculpted this [digital data vault](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ultra-compact-ssd) into the shape of a [smooth flat stone](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smooth-mouse-concept), making it both softer to the touch and smaller in size. Interestingly, the colorful pancake case is actually broader than the storage device inside it, reserving room around its inner edge for the accumulation of its [entwined USB cable](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cable-managements). The clever composition of the IRIVER Stone Hard Drive allows for excess cord length to be tucked away when it's not needed, reducing the tangled wire mess on your desktop. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.1/10 - Popularity: 11% | Activity: 13% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Functional Design:** The trend of creating visually appealing yet functional electronic devices, such as the IRIVER Stone Hard Drive, presents opportunities for innovative product designs. - **Wire Management Solutions:** The need for wire and cable organization in desk environments creates an opportunity for disruptive innovation in wire management solutions. - **Compact Electronics:** The trend of compact electronic devices like the IRIVER Stone Hard Drive presents opportunities for companies to create more efficient and travel-friendly tech products. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Computer Hardware:** The computer hardware industry has the opportunity to create more aesthetically pleasing and practical products, such as the IRIVER Stone Hard Drive, to meet the needs of their consumers. - **Office Supplies:** The office supply industry has the opportunity to create new wire and cable management solutions that improve desk organization and reduce clutter. - **Consumer Electronics:** The consumer electronics industry can take advantage of the trend in compact electronics to develop more travel-friendly and efficient products that meet the needs of their consumers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Playful External Hard-Disk Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cargo-hard-drive.md) - [Desk-Mounted Hard Drives](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hard-drive-concept.md) - [Folder-Shaped Hard Drive Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folder-external-hard-disk.md) - [Shipping Container Storage Drives](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cargo-hard-drive1.md) - [Icon-Shaped USB Drives](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folderdrive.md) - [Charming Retro Storage](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floppy-disk-inspired-sd-card.md) - [Naturalistic Stone Device Chargers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/einova-charging-stone.md) - [Textural Mobile Storage Drives](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/compact-ssd.md) - [Triangular Desktop Storage Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yofho-prisma.md)
