# Natural Material Scottish Cottages Baillie Baillie Architects Designs the Iorram Cottage By Amy Duong | Published 2025-03-22 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/iorram References: [dezeen](https://www.dezeen.com/2025/03/21/iorram-cottage-scottish-highlands-baillie-and-baillie-architects/) & [baillie-baillie](https://www.baillie-baillie.co.uk/) The Iorram cottage is a one-bedroom structure located in Plockton -- it was designed by Baillie Baillie Architects in the Scottish Highlands. The space is great as both a home and a holiday vacation for the studio's founders. The vision of the home was a modern interpretation of the [traditional cottages](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/borova-lada-cottage) that are found in the same location, which are often known as crofters cottages or as black houses. Co-founder of Baillie Baillie Architects, Colin Baillie shared with [Dezeen](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cairnconon-byre-house), "We wanted Iorram to communicate the value of craftsmanship, [locally sourced timber](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cornwall-retreat), and the inherent quality and calmness that natural materials bring to a space. Doing our own self-build project was an opportunity for us to explore a distinctly Scottish approach to natural material. The use of deep load-bearing walls, with a lighter-weight timber structure within, reflects traditional construction methods in the Highlands of Scotland."
